Celtic Fields at Stratton Down

This slide shows the Romano-British settlement which covers approximately an area of 15 acres. It is part of the extensive Celtic Fields Group on Grimston Down covering more than 100 acres. The fields in the centre of the area are clearly defined and between the field-banks there is a main hollow track separating a series a smaller enclosures, platforms and pits. Two barrows can be seen in the foreground. Finds from various small excavations during many years (reported in the PDNHAS) show that this area was settled from the

Bronze Age, through the Iron Age and the Roman times. (RCHM,Dorset I,1952,228-9; PDNHAS, 93(1971),156-7). Photos from the N taken in January 1990 - FR 22/17.
