Deserted Medieval Village at Bingham’s Melcombe.
One of two deserted villages in the parish of Melcombe Horsey. The remains, covering about 10
acres, are situated south of the church of St Andrew which can be seen to the right just above the
centre of the picture. Formerly a manor and hamlet, the manor has long been extinguished and the
hamlet depopulated. Traces of houses can be seen in a the meadow south of the church, centre of the photo.
The banks and scarps in these fields form a pattern of small enclosures. This grass-covered, unploughed
parkland contains rectilinear enclosures, formed by banks and ditches and trackways all typical of deserted
medieval habitation.

In winter, as can be seen in the photo, the south east corner becomes waterlogged.
