Dungeon Hill, hillfort.

This isolated and not widely known, well-preserved hillfort is situated on the summit of Dungeon Hill, north of Buckland Newton. It is surrounded by a single rampart and a ditch now overgrown with handsome trees. To the south, left hand side of the picture, a causeway crossing the ditch is thought to be the original entrance: it can be seen in the picture with the track emerging from the trees. In the 18th century the owner cleared the woodland and found a collection of pickaxes, sword blades, Roman coins and “antique bones”, among other remains. In 1881 the interior of the camp was excavated and Roman building material including tegulae and sherds of Roman pottery were found.

The interior is now kept as pasture. Lynchets can be seen on the east side, right hand side of the picture. Like many other hillforts in Dorset, this one divides two parishes, Wootton Glanville and Buckland Newton. (Source: RCHM, Dorset I,169). Photo taken in February 1992 from SE - FR 89/4.
