FRJ 01-13 The Hejaz railway in the foreground & part of the Haji road south of Amman, in the centre. The narrow sunken tracks can be seen crossing the photographs from left to right. The lines left by million of pilgrims following this route from Damascus to Mecca, across what is now Jordan, the Syrian Pilgrimage route. Through the centuries they walked, rode on camels, horses, donkeys or were carried in litters in huge parallel columns & the desert surface was left scarred by these deep furrows.
