The Rural Challenge is a Rural Development Commission funded competition that each year awards upto £1,000,000 to 6 projects from around the Country. The competition is in two stages with the first being at County level, where the best project from each County is selected, and the second being at national level, where 15 projects contend for the 6 prizes.

The object of Rural Challenge is that unique partnerships are formed between private organisations, local authorities and business enterprises which promote projects which lead to regeneration in deprived Rural Development Areas. The Brit Valley Railway aims to fulfil the objectives of the Rural Challenge Competition using the Railway as a core project.
